Riva 1920: Company Profile
Da anni lavoriamo a questo progetto: costruire mobili che sfidano il tempo e rispettano la natura.
Riva 1920 produce mobili da tre generazioni. Tutto nasce nel 1920 in una bottega artigianale e famigliare avviata dal nonno Nino Romano e portata avanti dal padre Mario Riva che utilizza solo legno massello. Nel 1992 Riva si trasforma in azienda e si presenta per la prima volta al Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano. Oggi sono Maurizio e Davide a condurre l’Industria Riva.
Negli anni comincia anche la collaborazione con diversi designer di fama internazionale, nel rispetto della filosofia aziendale che unisce funzionalità ed estetica delle forme senza mai dimenticare l’importanza del viver sano e sostenibile.
Progetti speciali sono nati da questo connubio di falegnameria e genialità, come il progetto volto al riutilizzo delle Briccole, protagoniste indiscusse della laguna di Venezia che guidano le imbarcazioni e segnalano la bassa marea. Unico nel suo genere, grazie all’operosità delle teredini, piccoli molluschi, questo legno vuole essere insieme, celebrazione di un materiale di riuso e tributo alla città di Venezia.
Altra iniziativa ricca di significato, è il progetto “Ground Zero…Ground Heroes” promosso da Riva 1920 per dimostrare solidarietà nei confronti delle famiglie delle vittime dell’11 Settembre 2001.
Sono stati realizzati cinque tavoli firmati da importanti designer e poi grazie ad un’asta è stato possibile donare il ricavato alle famiglie dei pompieri di New York che hanno perso la vita durante le operazioni di soccorso a Ground Zero.
Diversi sono anche i progetti culturali e le iniziative sociali che vedono coinvolta Riva 1920, come i concorsi di idee rivolti ai giovani designer ed architetti e il progetto di recupero del legno delle botti dismesse della Comunità di San Patrignano, riutilizzato e lavorato dagli stessi ragazzi del centro per realizzare nuove opere di design.
Pensando al futuro e ai giovani, Riva 1920 inaugura nel 2001 il Museo del Legno, per tramandare e non dimenticare che il legno è una risorsa rinnovabile, ma non infinita: solo un uso consapevole e una corretta politica di integrazione del patrimonio arboreo può garantire in futuro un giusto equilibrio dell’ecosistema.
Cultura, design e sensibilità sociale sono divenuti da allora parte fondamentale dell’attività di Riva 1920, da sempre i nostri prodotti raccontano una storia alle generazioni future “Produrre con onestà per tramandare” questo il nostro pensiero
Museo del legno
Il Museo del Legno di Riva 1920 è ospitato all’interno di una bellissima struttura quasi interamente ricoperta in legno di larice, uno tra i legni più resistenti alle intemperie meteorologiche e allo scorrere del tempo.
Il Museo del Legno ospita oltre 2000 macchinari ed utensili storici per la lavorazione del legno, una collezione unica nel suo genere in Europa, per la quantità di pezzi presenti (oltre 4.000). L’esposizione, che ha l’obiettivo di riscoprire le origini della tradizione canturina della lavorazione del legno, annovera molti utensili del 1800 provenienti da antiche botteghe artigiane italiane. Nell’ampio salone si trovano pialle, tavoli di lavoro, combinate, pulitrici, seghe a nastro, bindelle: termini tecnici quasi dimenticati che riportano alle origini della lavorazione del legno. La collezione Riva al completo è liberamente accessibile al pubblico e aperta a tutti coloro curiosi di conoscere da vicino le tradizioni della lavorazione del legno

We have been working for years on this project: creating furniture that challenges time and respects nature.
Riva 1920 has been producing furniture for three generations. Maurizio and Davide Riva are currently leading the company, started off by grandfather Nino Romano in 1920 and carried on by their father Mario Riva. In the past 20 years, the company was committed to producing furniture with only and exclusively natural materials and complements, guaranteeing low environmental impact.
While thinking of the future and young generations, Riva 1920 inaugurates in 2001 the Museum of Wood, to hand over and not to forget that wood is a renewable resource, but it is not infinite: only an aware use and a correct integration policy of the arboreal heritage can guarantee a balanced ecosystem in the future.
Culture, design and social sensitivity have become key features of Riva 1920’s activities. The collaboration with design masters strengthened a philosophy characterized by a merging of functionality and aesthetics, without ever forgetting the importance of healthy living and eco-sustainability. Special Projects were born out of this marriage between woodwork and geniality, such as the project aimed at re-utilizing Venetian Briccole, the millenary New Zealand Kauri wood, the project Ground Zero, to remember the history of 9/11 through design masters and San Patrignano “Barrique” project, allowing the recycling of olds barrels, thus helping former drug addicts of San Patrignano community to find a way out and start a new life.
Mueseum of Wood
The structure of the centre is almost entirely covered with larch-wood, one of the most long lasting and weather-resistant woods. The interior has been designed to bring out the essence and integrity of the furniture made of solid wood. The models on show are offered as clear examples of the different types of wood available and the variety of the company’s output which is updated every year to keep abreast of trends. The top floor houses the Museum of Wood, which gathers over 4.000 historic woodworking machines and tools. This is the biggest of such collections in the whole of Italy. The aim of the exhibition is to rediscover the origins and traditions of the woodworking industry in the Cantù area.
Riva 1920 collection is freely open to the public and to all those interested in learning about the traditions of woodworking.
